1990 Plainfield Tornado Collection

About This Project

At 3:30 p.m. on August 28, 1990, a seven-mile-long and roughly 700 feet wide tornado struck Will County. The tornado covered 16.4 miles from its point of origin in Wheatland Township to the point where it went airborne over Joliet. The tornado made international news. Twenty-eight people were killed, and more than 350 people were injured. Plainfield's destroyed buildings included one high school, one school administrative office building, one public elementary school, one parochial grade school, one public library branch, one Catholic Church, more than 1,000 homes and business either destroyed or severely damaged resulting in over $140 million in property damage begins to describe the worst tornado to strike Will County.

The Plainfield Public Library has been collecting stories, photographs and oral histories from residents affected by the 1990 tornado that ripped through Plainfield, Joliet, and Crest Hill on August 28, 1990. This ongoing collection is open to anyone who would like to share their memories of that tragic day.
